The opportunity to offset carbon emissions is a response to concerns from some Air France customers, key accounts, corporate or individual passengers, who are aware of the environmental impact of their trips.
This voluntary offsetting programme is managed by GoodPlanet's Action Carbone project. The amounts donated will be used to fund programs in fields such as energy conservation, renewable energy projects, forestry and agro forestry. Two carbon offset projects have already been put forward: production of clean coal by burning agricultural waste in the region of Saint Louis (Senegal) and the wide-scale installation of bio-gas tanks in Weining in China.
Passengers can now calculate their CO2 emissions using the CO2 emission calculator available on the Company's website since July 2007, and the calculation method is validated by the ADEME (French Agency for Environment and Energy Management). It is hosted on the http://developpement-durable.airfrance.com website and is also accessible from the reservation homepage www.airfrance.com.
GoodPlanet.org is a non-profit organization governed by the French 1901 act and founded on 1 July 2005 and chaired by Yann Arthus-Bertrand. The aim of this organization is to heighten public awareness of the world's issues and promote sustainable development.
